A Gastronome’s Journey sees celebrity chef Kate Lamont and John Jens share their passion for good food and premium wine, here at Karma Kandara from 12-14 February. This very special weekend begins on Friday as John Jens previews the weekend’s happenings over a wine or two – Temple Bar 6.00pm.

On Saturday at 11.00am, Kate offers her insider’s knowledge on the secrets behind simple food preparation and presentation, adding some hosting tips for good measure – titled “Cooks & Good Looks.”

If food is not your passion, then join John Jens on Saturday at noon in Veritas for a Master Class on “5 Cullen Cabernet Merlots – The Greatest of the Recent Years,”….ah, what an idyllic way to start the day!

Valentine’s Day is about romance and bubbly – so what better way to usher it in, than with a tasting of the precocious new Sparkling wines from Australia against the classic stars from France – “A Sparkling Sunday” – our tasting begins at Nammos Beach Club from 11.30am on Sunday.

Dust off the sand and be swept away by the sunset – all of this is just the entree to the main event – “A Night of Excellence in Pairing” – where you will be treated to a medley of Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnays & Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignons, impeccably paired with a Kate Lamont inspired dinner at ‘di Mare’ Restaurant from 7.30pm

Janine is a favourite at Karma Resorts and will be returning to Karma Kandara in January 2010. As well as being a qualified personal trainer, Janine is a Punch-fit boxing instructor, a Punch-fit kick-boxing instructor, a Spin cycle instructor and a circuit trainer. Some mornings it will be tough workouts on the beach and other morning’s general cardio & stability work. Training sessions can be individualized or as a circuit programme for maximum fat burning.

Once the torture is over, retire to the Karma Spa for an infra red sauna – great for dissolving cellulite! Or choose a 60 minute traditional Balinese massage, or a Karma Rubdown to aid in circulation. Yoga classes will also be available to stretch and lengthen those hard working muscles.

A concept visualized by our leader, John Spence – the Xenia Initiative is a programme designed
to attract a selection of fascinating and diverse artists to spend time with us here, at Karma Kandara.

During their time here, our aim is to provide an environment conducive to their particular talents,
allowing guests to derive enjoyment and interest from interacting with them. They will range from musicians to painters to spiritual healers – all available at the resort to Intermingle and exchange stories & experiences – thus, sharing their world with ours.

Our first “artist in residence” is Frida Hyvönen, a Swedish singer-songwriter who grew up in Robertsfors, a small place just outside Umeå in the north of Sweden. In 2005, Frida received the 2005 Stockholmspriset (”The Stockholm Prize”) by the Swedish publication Nöjesguiden for her debut album. Since this time, she has gone on to also win the Swedish newspaper ‘Dagens Nyheters’ prestigeous culture prize in 2009.

Frida has been touring Scandinavia, Europe and the US with her piano since 2004. In 2006 she toured the UK with José González, and in the summer of 2006, she toured the US with fellow Swedish artist Jens Lekman. And, she counts Benny Andersson of ABBA as one of her biggest fans.

Frida Hyvonen

Frida Hyvönen (born 1977) is a Swedish singer-songwriter. She grew up in Robertsfors, a small place just outside Umeå in the north of Sweden (which is also the hometown of the band Sahara Hotnights), and currently lives in the capital of Sweden, Stockholm.

Her first record, Until Death Comes, was recorded at Stockholm’s Atlantis Studios and co-produced with Jari Haapalainen of The Bear Quartet. The record was released in the EU in 2005 on The Concretes record label Licking Fingers, in the United States in 2006 on Secretly Canadian and in Australia in 2007 on Chapter Music. Hyvönen received the 2005 Stockholmspriset (”The Stockholm Prize”) by the Swedish publication Nöjesguiden for her debut album.[1] Her first single, “I Drive My Friend”, climbed the hit-list in Sweden for a few weeks.[citation needed]

Frida has been touring Scandinavia, Europe and the US with her piano since 2004. She also played in Shanghai. In the spring of 2006 she toured the United Kingdom with José González, and in the summer of 2006, she toured the US with fellow Swedish artist Jens Lekman. In the fall of 2005 Frida wrote music for dance performance PUDEL, by choreographer Dorte Olesen. She also performed the music live on stage. The music was recorded in 2006 and released in January 2007.

In the fall of 2007 Frida recorded a cover of the R.E.M. song “Everybody Hurts”, released in digital form by Stereogum She also covered the song “Sista dan tillsammans” together with Mattias Alkberg on “Dubbel Trubbel”, a tribute to Olle Adolphson.

Hyvönen’s next album, “Silence is Wild”, was released October 29, 2008 in Scandinavia and November 4, 2008 in North America and Australia.

She is also working on a collaboration with photographer Elin Berge, in a project that will be out in 2009.

It may have rained on Saturday, but that did not dampen our party spirits!

Nammos Beach will play host to two amazing musical talents – Russell Small & Jon Sa Trinxa. What better way to spend the day, than endlessly dancing in the sand to fabulous music!

Russell Small, one half of the internationally acclaimed “The Freemasons” will be guest DJ at Nammos Beach. Recognised as one of the most Grammy nominated re-mixers of his generation, Russell has worked with Beyonce, Kylie Minogue and more recently on Whitney Houston’s newest release “Million Dollar Bill” (Aug 2009). Originally from Brighton, England, he has been written up as the “UK’s Biggest Funky House DJ”!

On the other side of the tracks will be Jon Sa Trinxa from the chilled out beaches of Ibiza. He will quickly tell you that life wasn’t always this way. After a run of disappointments while travelling, he found himself snoozing on the beach near a bar where a DJ had not shown up for work. Seizing the opportunity, he jumped behind the discs and the rest as they say, is history – He has been a resident there now, since 1994, so he knows a chilled-out beach tune.

So, bring your best beach party vibe as the music will play from 3pm onwards……

“Uninvited”, their 4th hit single featuring the beautiful voice of Bailey Tzuke, had been a huge success in the UK and international releases were piling up. Their remix of Beyonce and Shakira’s “Beautiful Liar” had held the song at the UK’s No 1 spot for weeks some 8 months previous. Their most recent Kelly Rowland remix was looking set to be a top 10 UK hit and already becoming a massive radio record.

They had travelled the world to play some amazing parties and to top it all off – their first Co-Production for another artist was receiving rapturous reviews. The cherry on the icing of the cake is that the artist in question is in fact, Kylie Minogue.

Freemasons are infamously named after the Brighton pub quite near to the studio where the duo started productions nearly 3 years ago. They first came to clubland’s’ attention with the much loved, Jackie Moore sampling – “Love On My Mind” which quickly made the quantum leap from UK Dancefloors, into the charts and the Freemasons were off to a running start.

A second top 20 hit “Watchin” also featuring the extremely talented Amanda Wilson cemented their name with clubbers and industry alike and as the remixes started to flood in, it soon became apparent to everyone that the Freemasons were definitely much more than a one trick pony.

From his famous “eccletic sunset beach sets” to his main room residencies at the world’s most famous clubs Space, Pacha, Amnesia and the worlds largest nightclub Privilege (Manumussions) with 9000 people. Jon has woed lovers of good music from every corner of the globe.

Jon Sa Trinxa is as Balearic a DJ as you will find; having spent the last 13yrs at Ibiza’s hippest sunbathing spot, playing his blissed out eclectic sets to the beautiful people of Salinas beach as the resident DJ at Sa Trinxa beach bar.

He arrived in Ibiza in 1993 and his first big sets came in his first year, playing for Manumission and also in the main room of Pacha, supporting DJ Harvey. Since then he has played for most promoters on the island and in 2006 he held residencies for We Love Space, Made in Italy at Amnesia, and Rob da Bank’s Sunday Best in the Global room at Pacha; as well as his 8hrs a day, 3 days a week residency at Sa Trinxa.

Made Agus
Yoga instructor, Made Agus, has been working with Karma Spas since the start – inspiring both staff and guests in the amazing practice of strengthening the body internally and externally using breathe with movement. Agus has trained in both India and Bali and walks the yogi path with authentic passion and zeal. His teaching comprises of an energizing blend of vinyasa flow and core strength movements as well as still meditation and occasional chanting.

Yani
Yani the Tarotman is famous for his somewhat psychic card  readings. Spending time with Yani is said to be rather exciting and insightful. Yani has consulted all over the globe including Brazil, Hong Kong, Spain, Australia and New Zealand. His sessions last for at least one or two hours.

Erikia Dewi
Balinse-born Erikia Dewi is one of the most respected trainers in balinese indigenous treatments for spas around Bali and beyond. During this session she tells the story about the history of the balinese healer and uncovers how they combine physical touch with healing and herbs. As well, she describes various common herbs and demonstrates  how one can easily make a traditional healing herbal drinks, body scrubs and wraps at home.

Made Warmana
Balinese Reiki master is Made Warmana who is also famous for his Rainstopper energy work around the island. Made will lead you through a set series of postures that assist one in learning about the art of self-healing through positive energy. Once learnt, reiki energy can be accessed at anytime and can be useful in rebalancing self and others  – particularly helpful for alleviating stress, headaches and calming children.  Made has instructed all karma spa therapists in Level 1 and Level 2 Reki which they infuse into their healing massages.
