A Gastronome’s Journey sees celebrity chef Kate Lamont and John Jens share their passion for good food and premium wine, here at Karma Kandara from 12-14 February. This very special weekend begins on Friday as John Jens previews the weekend’s happenings over a wine or two – Temple Bar 6.00pm.

On Saturday at 11.00am, Kate offers her insider’s knowledge on the secrets behind simple food preparation and presentation, adding some hosting tips for good measure – titled “Cooks & Good Looks.”

If food is not your passion, then join John Jens on Saturday at noon in Veritas for a Master Class on “5 Cullen Cabernet Merlots – The Greatest of the Recent Years,”….ah, what an idyllic way to start the day!

Valentine’s Day is about romance and bubbly – so what better way to usher it in, than with a tasting of the precocious new Sparkling wines from Australia against the classic stars from France – “A Sparkling Sunday” – our tasting begins at Nammos Beach Club from 11.30am on Sunday.

Dust off the sand and be swept away by the sunset – all of this is just the entree to the main event – “A Night of Excellence in Pairing” – where you will be treated to a medley of Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnays & Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignons, impeccably paired with a Kate Lamont inspired dinner at ‘di Mare’ Restaurant from 7.30pm

A concept visualized by our leader, John Spence – the Xenia Initiative is a programme designed
to attract a selection of fascinating and diverse artists to spend time with us here, at Karma Kandara.

During their time here, our aim is to provide an environment conducive to their particular talents,
allowing guests to derive enjoyment and interest from interacting with them. They will range from musicians to painters to spiritual healers – all available at the resort to Intermingle and exchange stories & experiences – thus, sharing their world with ours.

Our first “artist in residence” is Frida Hyvönen, a Swedish singer-songwriter who grew up in Robertsfors, a small place just outside Umeå in the north of Sweden. In 2005, Frida received the 2005 Stockholmspriset (”The Stockholm Prize”) by the Swedish publication Nöjesguiden for her debut album. Since this time, she has gone on to also win the Swedish newspaper ‘Dagens Nyheters’ prestigeous culture prize in 2009.

Frida has been touring Scandinavia, Europe and the US with her piano since 2004. In 2006 she toured the UK with José González, and in the summer of 2006, she toured the US with fellow Swedish artist Jens Lekman. And, she counts Benny Andersson of ABBA as one of her biggest fans.

Frida Hyvonen

Frida Hyvönen (born 1977) is a Swedish singer-songwriter. She grew up in Robertsfors, a small place just outside Umeå in the north of Sweden (which is also the hometown of the band Sahara Hotnights), and currently lives in the capital of Sweden, Stockholm.

Her first record, Until Death Comes, was recorded at Stockholm’s Atlantis Studios and co-produced with Jari Haapalainen of The Bear Quartet. The record was released in the EU in 2005 on The Concretes record label Licking Fingers, in the United States in 2006 on Secretly Canadian and in Australia in 2007 on Chapter Music. Hyvönen received the 2005 Stockholmspriset (”The Stockholm Prize”) by the Swedish publication Nöjesguiden for her debut album.[1] Her first single, “I Drive My Friend”, climbed the hit-list in Sweden for a few weeks.[citation needed]

Frida has been touring Scandinavia, Europe and the US with her piano since 2004. She also played in Shanghai. In the spring of 2006 she toured the United Kingdom with José González, and in the summer of 2006, she toured the US with fellow Swedish artist Jens Lekman. In the fall of 2005 Frida wrote music for dance performance PUDEL, by choreographer Dorte Olesen. She also performed the music live on stage. The music was recorded in 2006 and released in January 2007.

In the fall of 2007 Frida recorded a cover of the R.E.M. song “Everybody Hurts”, released in digital form by Stereogum She also covered the song “Sista dan tillsammans” together with Mattias Alkberg on “Dubbel Trubbel”, a tribute to Olle Adolphson.

Hyvönen’s next album, “Silence is Wild”, was released October 29, 2008 in Scandinavia and November 4, 2008 in North America and Australia.

She is also working on a collaboration with photographer Elin Berge, in a project that will be out in 2009.

After purchasing his first set of decks in 1988 and working with a hip-hop crew in his native Austria, Nick packed up his turntables and relocated to the sunny shores of Australia more than a decade ago, where he has been heavily involved with the local music community and club culture as a DJ & producer (MetaBass, Foreign Heights, etc), promoter (StepForward!, Boogie Down, Make It Clap!, Dancehall Queen Australia), radio host (2SER, FBi, ABC, SBS) and music workshop tutor.

Over the course of his career he has performed at most major festivals, and nightclubs, at corporate & celebrity events, international movie launches, fashion shows, TV appearances, music awards, etc.

Nick was the first hiphop DJ in Australia to sign a major label deal for a DJ-mixed album (’Blazin’ Vol 1 / Universal Music, 2003, w/Nino Brown) and has since released a number of other albums, compilations and singles.

As part of the dynamic trio Foreign Heights he was even nominated for an ARIA in 2007, the main award in the Australian music industry.

He has also shared the stage with a multitude of artists such as Common, Talib Kweli, N.E.R.D., Missy Elliott, Jungle Brothers, 50 Cent & G-Unit, The Roots, Run DMC, Xzibit, Junior Reid, Public Enemy, Ice T, Beatnuts, The Alkaholics, Spearhead, DJ Krush, QBert, Grandmaster Flash, MixMasterMike, Jungle Brothers, Lyrics Born, Sean Paul, Cypress Hill, ColdCut, Jazzanova, Black Eyed Peas, Scribe, Roots Manuva, and many more and has hit the studio with Australian and international artists including Mr Lif, Will I Am, Casual, Pigeon John, Murs, Che’nelle, MC Trey, Maya Jupiter, 13th Son, Eternia, DJ Regal, and others.

DJ BABYDRIE

BabyDrie blends house and electro classics with the latest dance music to make any event a sure shot party!

DJ BabyDrie is as star in the making. She brings a new and sexy style to DJ’ing rarely seen in Asia. Her mixing is smooth and technical but also energetic and positive reflecting her youth and passion for music and for the art of DJ’ing.

Inspired by her brother, DJ OneGlove, she would watch him practice for years and hang out alongside him at clubs observing and learning about club culture and DJ’ing…Then on a trip to Australia in 2008 BabyDrie had the opportunity to join a DJ school at DJ Warehouse in Sydney Australia where she would learn the techniques involved to pursue her passion.

On her return to Jakarta she launched her DJ carrier, initially joining Inconnue DJ management for a few months before moving onto joining the Spinners crew, Outdoor Management and The Slingshot Asia Agency.

In March 2009 BabyDrie was invited to attend the Awdio.com world rep conference in Paris to experience more about European club and DJ culture with plans to return to Europe for some shows in 2010.

BabyDrie is also one half of Lorocue, a DJ duo with her brother DJ OneGlove. Lorocue are building a name for themselves in Asia as the hottest nightclub DJ duo around going back to back and mixing together delivering a unique style of DJ show.

In her short but illustrious DJ carrier BabyDrie has become a regular of the Kuala Lumpur club scene having toured there to play at some of the city’s top clubs including SkyBar, Red Square, Mardi Gras and AL’s Bar. She also regularly travels across Indonesia to play at some of the country’s top clubs including Lipps/Bogor, X1/Bogor, Red Square/Balikpapan, 29/Batam, DeJaVu/Bali and MBarGo/Bali.

Dan Murphy is a DJ based in Sydney, Australia. With international experience and a classically trained musical background, he’s played some of the biggest dance events and most exclusive private parties in the country.

Wine Women and Song!!! – Let the bubbles make you dance!

As part of its landmark wine series, Karma Kandara presents a celebration of French champagne.

Karma Resorts wine curator, Maria Lurighi, will take us on a fascinating journey through the process of making this temperamental wine and also share some of the stories of this appellation and its history, and of course there will be some surprises.

The selection of French Champagne from the grand houses of Veuve Cliqot, Jacquessin, Billecart and Cattier will be presented with a delectable menu by Chef Raymond Saja and will feature amongst other things citrus cured salmon, carnoli risotto, roastedscallops, and olive poached loin of lamb.

We share champagne to launch ships, on new years eve or on special occasions to celebrate life itself! . This very special evening will give insight in to one of the most fascinating stories in the wine world, and why women in particular have played such an important role in the launching of this wonderful drink!
